A controversial arbitration decision shook Brazilian football.
Manaus won 1-0 against Parintinsin the semifinal of the Amazonian Championship (Barezao), but a penalty sanctioned after a save by the goalkeeper changed the course of the match and sparked a strong scandal.
The controversial episode occurred 41 minutes into the second half. A soccer player from Parintins overflowed the sidelines and threw a low cross that found his striker in the area, who finished off the goal. The shot was contained by the archer from Manaus, Eugenio, who was hampered by one of his teammates.
The goalkeeper is the only one who touches the ball with his hand
At that moment the decision that generated the controversy arrived: the referee Leonardo Chaul Paixão interpreted that the defender of Manaus had touched the ball with hishand and sanctioned the visiting team a penalty. The repetition showed that the ball had been controlled by the goalkeeper with both hands, which revealed the error
.
Although his assistants tried to warn him about the move, the judge upheld the charge. Without VAR in this instance, it will only be used in the final, Parintins seized the opportunity, converted the penalty and tied the
match.
The definition was transferred to the round from the twelve steps, where Parintins won 5-4 and managed to qualify for the first time in the final of the second round of the tournament, where he will face Nacional, the most winning club in the championship.
Parintins ended up advancing on penalties
After the game, the president of Manaus, Luis Mitoso, exploded against the arbitration decision and aimed directly at the Amazonian Football Federation. “This is an event that will be negatively marked in the history of Amazonian football. I think that the president of the federation, Mr. Ednailson Rozenha, should take action. If he doesn't, he'll be complicit in what's happening,” he said.
The leader was even tougher when referring to the referee's performance. “What happened today was a flagrant robbery. An irresponsible attitude of a professional who is not qualified to arbitrate. I believed in arbitration. I was wrong. I gave them credit and today they robbed me terribly,”
he shot. Luis Mitoso, president of Manaus, said it was a blatant robbery
For his part, the archer Eugenio was also outraged by the situation: “I MADE THE STOP!
My defense freaked out after the ball overcame it. The linesman told him it wasn't a penalty, as did the fourth referee and the match's lawyer. He insisted, saying that I didn't make the stop, that he was my defense with his arm, and he remained firm in his decision. Three people advised him. And he didn't listen. It's a shame, months of work thrown away,” he lamented.
