The dictator of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, confirmed that his regime is holding talks with the United States government to address bilateral tensions between the two countries.
The recognition came during a press conference in which the Cuban president explained that officials from both governments have initiated exchanges to evaluate possible areas of dialogue.
According to Díaz-Canel, the objective of these contacts is “to identify which bilateral problems need a solution”.
The talks are taking place in a context of severe economic and energy crisis on the island.
The fuel crisis hits the island
During his statements, the leader of the regime recognized the impact that the shortage of fuel is having on the Cuban economy
.“There haven't been any fuel ships coming in for more than three months,” he said.
The leader argued that the lack of oil has a profound impact on the daily lives of the population.
The energy crisis has become one of the main problems facing the Cuban government in the midst of the economic deterioration that the country is going through.
Discreet conversations with the Trump administration
,Díaz-Canel also referred to contacts with President Donald Trump's
administration. The Cuban president said that this is a process that is carried out with discretion and that it is still in an early phase.
“These are lengthy processes. It all takes a while. We are in the early stages,” he said.
The leader added that the exchanges seek to explore possible areas of cooperation between the two countries.
Trump had previously mentioned that U.S. officials were maintaining contacts with Cuban authorities, although Havana had denied such talks at the time.
