The presence of toys and personal ornaments will also allow us to deepen the study of children's funeral rituals and to understand what objects were considered significant when the little ones were dismissed.
Why the finding could change what is known about the ancient city of Tomis
Beyond the recovered objects, the discovery represents an opportunity to investigate the organization of the Roman necropolis
.The tomb was located near an old road that connected Tomis to Histria, so specialists believe that its position could provide information on the distribution of funerary spaces outside the city.
The researchers will seek to relate this sarcophagus to other archaeological remains identified in the immediate vicinity to establish how the territory was used and what characteristics the community that inhabited the region during the Roman period had.
It is also planned to carry out more detailed studies on the materials found, the techniques used to build the coffin and the peculiarities of the burial.
For the time being, no precise dating of the sarcophagus or the identity of the child have been reported, issues that could be clarified as the analysis progresses.
The museum pointed out that the results of the research will expand knowledge about the daily life and funerary practices of ancient Tomis. Later, the findings will be presented for scientific and museum purposes.
