Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadiwas urgently hospitalized after suffering a severe deterioration of health after being detained by the Tehran regime for almost five months. The 54-year-old activist was arrested in December 2025 after criticizing Iranian religious authorities during
a funeral.
According to her foundation, Mohammadi was transferred from Zanjan prison, in northern Iran, to a local hospital after suffering a serious heart attack and two episodes of loss of consciousness. Her relatives say that the activist lost around 20 kilos since her arrest, a fact that reflects the brutality of the Iranian regime against one of the most recognized voices in the defense of human rights
. Narges Mohammadi was arrested while attending a funeral.
Attorney Mostafa Nili explained that Mohammadi fainted after a sudden drop in his blood pressure. Her supporters had also warned that, at the end of March, the activist had suffered a heart attack. When they were able to visit her days later, they found her pale and having difficulty walking, to the point of needing the assistance of a nurse
.
From Oslo, the Nobel Committee called on the Iranian authorities to immediately transfer her to Tehran so that she can receive specialized medical care. The president of the agency, Jørgen Watne Frydne, warned that without this treatment
his life is still in danger.
Mohammadi's situation once again exposes the repressive nature of the Iranian regime, which punishes those who question its power with imprisonment, isolation and ill-treatment. In February, the Norwegian Committee had already denounced his brutal detention, physical abuse and life-threatening conditions of confinement
.
Mohammadi was arrested on December 12, 2025 in Mashhad, during the funeral of Khosrow Alikordi, a human rights lawyer. According to the story released by the Nobel Committee, civilian agents surrounded her, beat her with sticks and clubs, and then dragged her hair across the floor, causing injuries
to her scalp.
Once arrested, she allegedly continued to be beaten during her transfer to prison. She was then subjected to isolation in a cold cell, without windows and with constant artificial lighting. She was also transferred between different wards, questioned and, according to the complaints, deprived of adequate medical follow-up despite injuries, cardiac symptoms and suspicions related to possible breast cancer
. Narges Mohammadi has been in detention for almost 6 months.
In February, the Iranian judiciary sentenced her to seven years in prison for “assembly and connivance to commit crimes”. In addition, he received another sentence of six years for threatening national security and a year and a half for propaganda against the Islamic system
.
Mohammadi has been facing arrests and court cases for more than 25 years for his activism against the death penalty and the compulsory use of the veil in Iran. In 2023, she received the Nobel Peace Prize while still in prison, becoming an international symbol of resistance to a theocratic dictatorship
