The UN Decolonization Committee unanimously approved a resolution project presented by the Government of Javier Milei that demands the United Kingdom to resume negotiations with Argentina over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.

The initiative, co-presented with Chile and supported by Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, received unanimous backing from the body after intense diplomatic efforts led by the Argentine Foreign Ministry.

The outcome reinforces the country's historical position in the claim for the territory in the South Atlantic and once again places international pressure on London.

The session began shortly after 11 a.m. and, after more than two hours of deliberations, concluded with the approval of the text.

Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno participated in the meeting accompanied by the Argentine ambassador to the United Nations, Francisco Tropepi, who, along with his team, carried out a series of key negotiations with the Committee members to ensure consensus.

During his presentation, Quirno firmly upheld the Argentine position and questioned the British arguments regarding the principle of self-determination.

“In the Falkland Islands, there is no colonized people that can exercise that right. There is a British population implanted by the occupying power after the expulsion of the authorities and the legitimate Argentine inhabitants. The total population of the islands is around three thousand inhabitants, of which less than half were born there,” he stated.

The foreign minister also focused on the strategic and military nature of the British occupation. “Approximately one thousand two hundred British soldiers are stationed there. That proportion reveals the strategic and militarized nature of the occupation,” he warned.

In that same vein, he denounced illegitimate economic activities in the disputed area, particularly related to the exploitation of natural resources.

“Argentina has denounced those actions and will continue with all legitimate measures at its disposal. The most concerning episode is related to the potential start of hydrocarbon exploitation activities in disputed areas. In December 2025, the illegitimate licensees Rockhopper Exploration PLC and Navitas Petroleum Development and Production Limited made announcements regarding the development of the Sea Lion field, located in the North Falkland Basin, offshore from the Falkland Islands," he noted.

Before developing the legal arguments supporting Argentine sovereignty, Quirno also expressed the Milei Government's position regarding the international situation, by expressing solidarity with Venezuela over the recent earthquakes.

“Argentina wants to express its condolences and solidarity to the Venezuelan people in light of the tragedy that occurred yesterday with the succession of earthquakes. President Milei expressed yesterday Argentina's willingness to provide humanitarian assistance to Venezuela in these difficult times they are facing,” he stated.

The foreign minister's speech was part of a broader strategy by the national government to strongly reestablish the claim for the Falklands in the international arena. Through a combination of diplomatic efforts and political positioning, Milei's administration managed to consolidate a new backing at the United Nations.

For decades, the international body has urged the United Kingdom to resolve the dispute through diplomatic means. However, London has systematically avoided advancing in negotiations, disregarding the repeated calls from the international community.

The approval of this resolution, actively promoted by the Milei Government, once again highlights the isolation of the British position and reinforces the historical claim of sovereignty, in a context where Argentina has regained prominence in international forums.
