In the Oshana region, in northern Namibia, politician Adolf Hitler Uunona once again won comfortably in the local elections held this Wednesday, thus securing his continuity as the representative of the Ompundja constituency. With this result, the leader of the ruling SWAPO party achieves his fifth consecutive term since he first took office in 2004.

Although the Electoral Commission of Namibia has not yet officially released the full count, various reports agree that Uunona far surpassed his opponents, something that has become common in this area of fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. In the 2020 elections, for example, he obtained 85% of the votes, a figure that consolidated his status as a local reference beyond the controversy his name provokes.

In an interview given to the German newspaper Bild in 2020, when he was obtaining his fourth term, he stated that he had "nothing to do" with Nazi ideology and clarified that he also doesn't harbor any kind of global power ambition. "Until I grew up, I didn't realize: This man wanted to subjugate the entire world," he said at the time, and added: "I have nothing to do with any of that."

The politician revealed that his name was a decision made by his father, who, according to his interpretation, was unaware of the historical and symbolic weight it carried. "As a child, I saw it as a completely normal name," he commented on another occasion to Namibian media. He also insisted that his identity doesn't imply similarities with the Nazi leader either in character or in thought: "It doesn't mean that I have Adolf Hitler's character or that I resemble Adolf Hitler from Germany," he stated.

Although in his daily activities he usually introduces himself simply as Adolf Uunona, he ruled out officially changing his name, arguing that "it's too late for that."

The party to which he belongs, the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), keeps a historical position marked by its anti-colonial struggle and its rejection of white minority rule. Although traditionally identified with the center-left, in recent times SWAPO has shifted toward more moderate policies and greater market openness, seeking to respond to the country's social and economic changes.
