After being eliminated from the Club World Cup, Marcos Rojo will terminate his contract with Boca.

The defender did not play a single minute in the tournament and lost ground in Miguel Ángel Russo's considerations

After Boca's elimination from the Club World Cup, Marcos Rojo is preparing to terminate his contract early. The agreement that bound the defender to the club was valid until December 2025, but the relationship with the management and coaching staff has become unsustainable.

Tensions between Rojo and the club have increased in recent weeks. The tension reached its peak when coach Miguel Ángel Russo decided to remove him from the starting line-up and place Ayrton Costa in his position.

During the international tournament, the player didn't play any minutes in any of the three matches the team played. Even when Costa was injured and couldn't play against Auckland City, Russo chose Marco Pellegrino, who was recently signed from Huracán.

Given this situation and realizing he wasn't in the coach's plans, Rojo decided to step aside and begin negotiating his departure. The defender's goal is to find a new club where he can play the final years of his professional career.

Rojo's time at Boca and his possible destinations

Marcos Rojo arrived at Boca in February 2021 from Manchester United, at 30 years old and with the excitement of fulfilling his dream as a fan of the club. However, his time was marked by inconsistency, mainly due to injuries. He suffered multiple muscle tears, muscle strains, and a torn cruciate ligament that kept him off the field for long periods.

Additionally, some off-field incidents damaged his relationship with the fans and with the management led by Juan Román Riquelme. The tension increased especially after the sudden departure of Fernando Gago, with whom Rojo had a good relationship.

For now, the center-back's future is uncertain. Although his name has been linked several times with Inter Miami, where he could play alongside Lionel Messi, his camp currently rules out a return to Estudiantes de La Plata, the club where he developed as a professional.
