The representative from the state of Georgia announced that she will leave her duties in the lower chamber after her betrayal of the president

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (Republican-Georgia) announced that she will leave her seat on January 5, 2026, in a decision that shook the Republican Party and marks the outcome of an increasingly public confrontation with President Donald Trump.
The resignation comes just one week after Trump officially withdrew his support and political backing, accusing the legislator of dedicating herself solely to complaining and labeling her as "wacky" and "lunatic" in a message posted on Truth Social.
This rift originated from Greene's insistence on demanding the release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, a topic that Trump had approached with extreme caution and that caused tensions within the party.
Greene was one of only four Republicans who signed a petition to force a vote in the House on the resolution, a gesture that for many of the president's allies represented an open break with the political line set by Trump.

Although the president ultimately assured that he would sign the measure, which was approved almost unanimously in both chambers, his displeasure with the congresswoman was already evident.
Other recent disagreements were added to that dispute, such as Greene's support for extending Obamacare subsidies, her criticism of H-1B visas, her defense of state moratoriums on artificial intelligence, and her rejection of 50-year mortgages.
These positions distanced her from key sectors of Trumpism, which considered these stances a deviation from the solid and disciplined alignment she had shown since her arrival in Congress in 2021.
In her statement, Greene explained that her decision would partly respond to Trump's public call for a Republican to challenge her in the 2026 primaries. "I have too much self-respect and dignity," she declared, claiming that she did not want to subject her district to a "hurtful and hateful" contest driven by the very president she had supported.

Even so, within the House these words were not interpreted with benevolence. A Republican legislative aide described the resignation as a vindictive move, aimed at deliberately harming the fragile Republican majority (219–213). From that sector, Greene is accused of prioritizing personal conflicts with Trump over the party's stability in a critical legislative year.
The ironic comment from the same aide, "MTG left before Pelosi," reflected the discontent among Republicans, suggesting that the congresswoman abandoned her responsibilities even before veteran opposition figures. For citizens and Republicans, Greene's attitude constitutes a contradiction with the image of total loyalty she cultivated for years and an example of how she ended up confronting Trump on strategic issues, weakening the party's internal cohesion.
They argue that her resignation doesn't represent an act of integrity, but rather the culmination of a political distancing that she herself provoked by crossing lines that the hard core of Trumpism and the Republican electoral base define as an unforgivable betrayal.
