Amazon Games is reportedly undergoing a restructuring that has led to the cancellation of the MMO based on The Lord of the Rings. According to Bloomberg, the layoffs directly affected the company's video game division, which also reportedly decided to end development of New World, its main multiplayer title.
In total, Amazon announced the elimination of more than 14,000 jobs worldwide, a measure that had a direct impact on the teams responsible for creating AAA games. A former engineer confirmed that both the New World team and the The Lord of the Rings team were affected by the layoffs.

The message that sparked uncertainty
"This morning I was part of the layoffs at Amazon, along with my colleagues from New World and the The Lord of the Rings game," she wrote on her LinkedIn account. The post was deleted hours later, which raised doubts about whether it was a mistake.
If confirmed, it would be Amazon's second failed attempt to launch a MMORPG set in Middle-earth. The first was canceled in 2021 after Tencent acquired Leyou Technologies, the studio that was developing the original project.
New World, also at the center of the cuts
Meanwhile, Amazon Games announced that New World will stop receiving updates, although its servers will remain active until 2026. The company guaranteed that it will provide at least six months' notice of any changes affecting the game's continuity and promised more news about its future in the coming months.
