The leftist Andy Burnham is on track to become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom after establishing himself as the only candidate in the internal process of the Labour Party, opened following the resignation of Keir Starmer on June 22.

The former mayor of Greater Manchester received overwhelming support within the parliamentary bloc, putting him in a position to assume leadership without internal competition.

With the formal start of nominations, Burnham secured the backing of 322 of the 403 Labour MPs, far exceeding the minimum threshold of 81 endorsements required to run. This figure not only guarantees him the candidacy but also leaves no room for other contenders within the party.

The support process took place during a day when lawmakers visited the offices of the Labour Parliamentary Group in Westminster in a staggered manner to formalize their support.

Meanwhile, the last possible competitor, former Defence Minister Al Carns, decided not to participate in the contest and expressed his support for the former mayor. “Months of internal Labour politics is not what the country needs right now. Andy Burnham has earned this,” he stated in a press release.

With no rivals in the race and consolidated internal support, Burnham will be formally declared leader of the Labour Party once the nomination period ends, which will extend until July 16. According to the planned schedule, he would be proclaimed the following day at a special conference of the political force.

If this step is realized, the leader would assume office as prime minister on July 20, after the corresponding meeting with King Charles III.

The British parliamentary system allows for such transitions without the need to call general elections, as the leadership of the government is determined by the party in majority in Parliament. In this context, the next national election is not expected until 2029,

With the majority backing of his party already secured and no competitors in the internal race, Burnham's path to the position appears virtually clear.
