During the Tokyo Game Show 2025, Kazuhisa Wada, director of P Studio and creative lead at Atlus, revealed that Persona 4 Revival will mark a new chapter for the franchise. According to the developer, the goal is to deliver a completely different experience while preserving the soul that made the original title a JRPG classic.
"The challenge isn't just to add more content, but to ensure the experience is enjoyable in a new and different way," Wada explained. The announcement caused excitement, but also cautious expectations among fans, who still remember the controversies surrounding Persona 3 Reload.
An ambitious reinvention after the lessons of Persona 3 Reload
Atlus's previous remake, Persona 3 Reload, modernized the series with visual and mechanical improvements inspired by Persona 5 Royal, although it removed elements that fans considered essential, such as the female protagonist from Persona 3 Portable.
That decision sparked controversy and set a precedent for Persona 4 Revival. Wada acknowledged that time and resource constraints affected the development of the previous title, and assured that the new project aims to avoid those mistakes by offering a more comprehensive and surprising product.

"We want both veterans and new players to feel they're experiencing something unique, not just a simple repetition of Golden or the original," the director added.
Based on Golden or the original version?
One of the most debated points among fans is whether the remake will be based on Persona 4 Golden (2012) or the original version released in 2008. The former included new scenes, additional social links, graphical improvements, and extra difficulty levels, while the latter preserves the purest spirit of the PlayStation 2 classic.
According to Wada, the idea isn't to "repeat or improve what's already there," but to go further with a proposal that will surprise even the most loyal fans. Atlus seeks to maintain the emotional tone and mystery that define the story set in Inaba, while introducing new narrative and gameplay elements that enhance immersion and replayability.

Global anticipation and expansion toward new audiences
After the international success of Persona 5, Atlus aims for Persona 4 Revival to serve as a gateway for new Western players, while still paying tribute to those who have followed the saga since its beginnings.
The company views the remake as a celebration of the series and an opportunity to explore new technical and aesthetic possibilities. While no concrete details have been confirmed yet—such as difficulty modes or the inclusion of Golden's extra scenes—Wada promised "genuine surprises" that could include mechanical or narrative innovations never before seen in the franchise.

Atlus aims to surprise
Although official details remain scarce, the community expects Atlus to maintain the identity of the original game without abandoning evolution. With a particularly passionate fan base, the company knows the bar is set high: Persona 4 Golden is considered one of the most influential JRPGs of the past twenty years.
Meanwhile, anticipation continues to grow, and Persona 4 Revival is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the coming years. If it fulfills its promise of innovation without losing its essence, it could solidify Atlus as one of the most consistent studios in reinventing its classics.
