In an international context marked by a possible historic change in the dispute over the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands, the Buenos Aires governor, Axel Kicillof, questioned the foreign policy of President Javier Milei, in a speech that quickly generated controversy due to the chosen moment and the content of his statements. Through his X account, Kicillof pointed directly against the strategic alignment of the national Government with the United States and former President Donald Trump, arguing: “The international policy that Milei presents as novel responds to the same unipolar and surrendering thinking that was already applied more than three decades ago with catastrophic results. The future challenge will be to rebuild strategic relationships that strengthen industry, development and national sovereignty.”
The provincial president's criticism comes just after high-impact information emerged: the leak of an internal Pentagon email in which the Donald Trump administration is considering reviewing its historic support for the United Kingdom in the dispute over the Falkland Islands, in the context of geopolitical tensions linked to the conflict in the Middle East.According to Reuters, the document includes among the possible reprisals of the U.S. government the reconsideration of diplomatic support for European claims over “imperial possessions”, specifically referring to the Falkland Islands, currently administered by London but claimed by Argentina.
This potential turn, if realized, would represent an unprecedented event in contemporary international politics and occurs in a scenario crossed by the close relationship between Javier Milei and Donald Trump, who considers the Argentine president to be one of his main global allies.
The leak had a strong impact on the British press, being replicated by media such as The Sun, The Telegraph, Daily Mail, The Independent and The Guardian, amid growing tensions between Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whom the Republican leader even described as a “coward” for his refusal to support military actions against Iran.At the same time, the Argentine Government maintains that the current international strategy aims to consolidate concrete support in multilateral forums such as the UN, the OAS and Mercosur, with an active policy of alignment with Western powers, especially the United States.
