The match between Flamengo and Racing in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores semifinals left much more than an adverse result for the Argentine team. The 1-0 defeat in Rio de Janeiro was accompanied by serious concern for Santiago Sosa's health, who ended up hospitalized after an accidental elbow blow from Marcos Rojo.
In the recent official statement from the Academia, it was clarified that the former River player was discharged and that the tests confirmed the midfielder suffered a fracture in the right upper maxillary sinus, which will be evaluated by a maxillofacial surgeon to determine if surgery is necessary.
If surgery is confirmed, Sosa would miss the rest of the year and would be ruled out for the second leg against Mengão next Wednesday at the Cilindro de Avellaneda.
Flamengo also suffers a significant loss due to fracture
The Brazilian team did not come out unscathed from the match either. Pedro, one of Fla's key players, ended up in the hospital after suffering a blow to his arm during the second half. Medical tests confirmed that he has a fracture in his right forearm, which will keep him inactive for three to four weeks.
"Pedro received a kick to his arm and is now being examined at the hospital to assess the severity of the injury. He is a player who uses his arm a lot to protect himself and he was very uncomfortable," explained coach Filipe Luís at the press conference.
Pedro sufrió una fractura del antebrazo
With the absence of its top scorer, who has 15 goals in 37 matches in 2025, Flamengo will have to seek qualification for the final without its main offensive reference. The rematch, scheduled for October 29 in Avellaneda, promises to be as demanding as it is decisive for both teams, who arrive physically and emotionally affected.
