After being left out of Muñeco's plans, the Colombian supported the coach, addressed the criticism, and spoke about his future destination
River closed 2025 with a concerning image, and Marcelo Gallardo, who confirmed his continuity, decided to make a deep renewal of the squad. In that overhaul, one of those targeted was Miguel Ángel Borja, who ended his cycle in Núñez after a poor final stretch and several matches relegated to the bench. Even so, the Colombian chose to say goodbye with kind gestures and words for the most successful coach in the club's history and the fans.
"Marcelo is a gladiator. I believe Gallardo will be around for a long time. He's prepared, he has the armor a warrior needs. I have no doubt River in 2026 will shine as it has for so many years," he said in an interview with PicadoTV, offering praise for the coach who decided not to consider him anymore.
Borja confía en que Gallardo pueda revertir la situación de River
Borja had arrived with great performances and impressive numbers, but his level dropped along with the team's during the last year. The murmurs increased, the fans' patience decreased, and the end became inevitable.
Despite that, the forward didn't dwell on the bitter end of his time at the club: "Thank you very much because you trusted me. Respect means everything to me, and there was never an insult. I never experienced unpleasant moments. On the field, they decide because they pay for a ticket, and that's valid. When things don't work out, it's normal for you to be demanded and criticized. I don't hide from responsibility."
He also left a message of affection for the fans: "I hope River's doors remain open for when I get to come watch you play. From afar, I'll be rooting for you to become champions."
The Hummingbird's future
After three years at the club, with 159 matches and 62 goals, Borja says goodbye while waiting to define his new destination. Several options appear on the horizon, the most likely being a possible return to Colombia to play for the team where he debuted, Junior de Barranquilla. Additionally, there is also interest from Mexico (América, Cruz Azul, and Tigres UANL) and even offers from Russia and Netherlands.
Borja podría volver a Junior
When asked about his future, the forward was clear: "As of today, I haven't decided anything. I'm waiting for the best option. I've received offers, and I'm analyzing them with my family because I don't want to rush."
