Bungie's shooter returns with a key closed test to define its future and PlayStation's future

The American developer Bungie, known for legendary franchises such as Halo and Destiny, has confirmed the opening of registrations for a closed technical test of Marathon, its highly anticipated multiplayer shooter.

The event will take place between October 22 and 27, after months of uncertainty and an indefinite delay that caused concern among fans and industry analysts.

This stage will be decisive for both Bungie and Sony, as both companies seek to reposition the project as a competitive title within the online shooter genre.

How to participate in the Marathon technical test

Access to the test will be highly limited and available only to players in Europe and North America. Those who wish to participate must register on Bungie's official website before October 16.

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam) users will be able to register. All selected participants must sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), which will prevent them from sharing images, videos, or comments about the gameplay experience.

The test version will include substantial improvements compared to the Alpha phase:

  • Three new playable maps.
  • Five customizable Runner Shells or character skins.
  • Proximity chat system.
  • Adjustments to combat pacing.
  • Optional solo mode.
  • Deeper environmental narrative.

These new features directly address community criticism and aim to regain the trust of the gaming audience.

Marathon: centerpiece in Bungie and Sony's strategy

The development of Marathon is considered key in Sony's roadmap to strengthen its catalog of live service games.

The Japanese company acquired Bungie in 2022 for more than $3.3 billion, with the expectation of consolidating successful titles in the competitive multiplayer shooter market.

However, recent months have been difficult: the failure of Concord, the decline in Destiny 2's player base, and the departure of CEO Pete Parsons have left Bungie at the center of criticism.

For this reason, Marathon represents not only the return to a historic IP but also the opportunity to regain prestige and demonstrate that the studio can adapt to the demands of the audience.

Expectations and challenges of a project under scrutiny

After the initial presentation and the Alpha demo, Marathon received strong criticism for its lack of content and visual style. This forced Bungie to indefinitely delay the release and rethink its creative direction.

The October technical test will be, according to sources close to the studio, a "critical checkpoint" to assess progress and determine the future of the title.

Feedback from selected players will be essential to define a new release date and potential content improvements.

For now, Marathon doesn't have an official release date, although everything indicates that Bungie seeks to rebuild its relationship with fans and position the game as a benchmark in the revival of competitive shooters.
