Club World Cup: how the round of 16 ended and what the quarterfinals will be like
After some very hard-fought matches, and with a few surprises, the World Cup tournament enters its final stretch starting Friday with the quarterfinals
Finally, the Club World Cupdetermined the teams qualified for the quarterfinals: Palmeiras, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Fluminense, Al-Hilal, Real Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund. With a two-day break until the next matches, it is necessary to review how the best 8 teams in the tournament reached this stage and the details of their respective matchups in the next round.
How the round of 16 unfolded
The first match of this stage was between two Brazilian teams: Palmeiras and Botafogo. After 90 very hard-fought minutes, Verdão finally managed to prevail in extra time thanks to Paulinho's goal in the 100th minute and is one of the South American representatives in the quarterfinals.
It is worth noting that Abel Ferreira's team will have the significant absence of Gustavo Gómez, who received a second yellow card in extra time and will miss the next match.

Later that same Saturday, Benfica and Chelsea were set to determine the opponent for the São Paulo team. For much of the match, the London side showed great dominance over the Portuguese, although they could only take the lead with James's lone goal in the 64th minute.
Although it seemed nothing else would happen, the match had to be suspended in the 85th minute due to a possible thunderstorm. After a delay of almost two hours, the match was able to continue and brought a surprise: Benfica equalized at the last moment thanks to a penalty converted byÁngel Di Maria.
The Portuguese team earned another chance thanks to Fideo's goal; however, their joy was short-lived, as at the start of extra time, Prestianni saw a second yellow card, leaving the Eagles a man down. From that moment on, Chelsea was the only team on the field and, in a burst in the second half of extra time, scored 3 goals (Nkunku in the 108th, Neto in the 114th, and Dewsbury-Hall in the 117th), sealing the match and securing their place in the quarterfinals, where they will face Palmeiras.

Unlike the first round of 16 matchups, Sunday's matches had two clear winners: Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. For the Champions League winners, they crushed Inter Miami led by Lionel Messi with a resounding 4-0, thanks to Neves's brace, an own goal byAvilés, and a goal by Hakimi, all in just the first half.

Meanwhile, Bayern faced a Flamengo side that managed to put up a fight, but ultimately succumbed. The Bavarian team quickly took the lead with two goals in the first 10 minutes: Eric Pulgar's own goal in the 6th and Harry Kane in the 9th. Although Fla pulled one back thanks to Gerson's powerful shot, the German team restored their two-goal lead with a goal by Goretzka before halftime.
Needing to chase the result, the Brazilian team began to attack more, earning a penalty in the 55th minute that Jorginho converted. Although the 3-2 scoreline gave Flamengo some hope, their desperation to equalize left some gaps in defense, which Kane exploited to make it 4-2. Now in the quarterfinals, Bayern will face PSG.

On Monday, Fluminense pulled off a shock against Inter Milan. At the start of the match, Flu took the lead with a header by Germán Cano in the 4th minute. Although Inter tried to recover after the early blow, they never felt comfortable and were neutralized by the Brazilian team.
Despite multiple attempts in the second half by the Nerazzurri, Fluzão managed to hold on and even increased the lead near the end of the match with a goal by Hércules.

Later that day, Manchester City faced Al-Hilal in the clash of Arab capitals, and it was one of the most thrilling of this stage. The English team took the lead early thanks to a goal by Bernardo Silva in the 9th minute.
The outlook seemed straightforward for City; however, at the start of the second half Simone Inzaghi's side replied with two goals, scored by Marcos Leonardo and Malcom. Immediately after, Erling Haaland equalized and the Citizens relentlessly attacked an Arab team that managed to hold on and take the match to extra time.
In the first extra period, Al-Hilal surprised with a header goal by Koulibaly, taking the lead once again. Minutes later in the second half, the recently substituted Phil Foden scored the 3-3 that temporarily sent the match to penalties; however, Leonardo reappeared in the 112th minute for the Arabs and sealed the 4-3 final score. With this historic victory, the only Asian representative will face Fluminense in the next round.

Finally, yesterday the round of 16 concluded with the matches between Real Madrid and Juventus, and Borussia Dortmund and Rayados de Monterrey. During the first 45 minutes, the Madrid team struggled to break down the Turin side, who barely managed to threaten Courtois's goal. Although in the second half they showed all their attacking weapons, Los Merengues only managed a 1-0 win with a goal by Gonzalo García in the 54th minute.

Meanwhile, the final round of 16 match went to Borussia, who defeated Rayados de Monterrey 2-1, but it was more complicated than it seems. Although the Germans went 2-0 up in the opening minutes of the match, thanks to Guirassy's brace, the match was very hard-fought, even with a Mexican team that managed to dominate and set the pace, although they could only pull one back with Berterame's goal at the start of the second half. In the next round, they will face Real Madrid.
