Fluminense pulled off a shock and eliminated Inter Milan in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup. With goals from Germán Cano at the start of the match and Hércules near the end, Flu knocked out an Inter side that tried everything.
The Italian team started off sluggishly and the Brazilians took advantage before the five-minute mark. Martinelli recovered the ball in midfield and played it to the right, where Jhon Arias, one of the standout players of the match, found space and accelerated.
The Colombian broke down the wing and sent in a cross that initially did not seem dangerous, as it deflected off Alessandro Bastoni and was left for Yann Sommer. However, the Swiss goalkeeper did not come out to clear and Germán Cano beat him to it with a precise header that went between his legs.
Despite showing more attacking intent, the Nerazzurri could not recover from the early blow and struggled to create effective attacks, while Flu held firm in defense and even had a few chances up front. One of those opportunities came in the 40th minute, when, after a series of headers, Ignacio would make it 2-0, but it would be disallowed for offside.
