Perplexity announced that Comet, its browser with integrated artificial intelligence, is now available for free in its desktop version. Until now, only those subscribed to paid plans could access it.

The company aims to compete with Google Chrome and offer a different experience, where browsing is combined with the use of prompts and a real-time AI assistant.

How Comet works and what sets it apart from Chrome

Comet's proposal targets a hybrid model between browser and search engine. According to Perplexity, the assistant "travels the web with the user" instead of being embedded as in other browsers with AI.

This means it can help with online shopping, travel bookings, or real-time data verification. In addition, all responses include verified sources, which distinguishes it from competitors like ChatGPT or Claude.

Comet Plus: the premium subscription

Although the free version is already active, there is an option called Comet Plus. According to CEO Aravind Srinivas, it works similarly to Apple News Plus and offers access to content from international media outlets.

Comet Plus is included in Perplexity Pro and Max plans, while for other users it costs 5 dollars per month.

Is it ready to compete with Chrome?

Google has been making progress with the integration of Gemini in Chrome, adding AI features to browsing. However, Comet seeks to differentiate itself by focusing on prompts and immediate source verification.

It also joins the wave of AI browsers like Arc Browser and Opera with Neon. Its goal is to attract those who already use chatbots like Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini but want a unified experience.

Availability and first impressions

For now, Comet is only available on desktop and not on Android. It offers widgets on the home screen, quick access history, and the option to activate a voice assistant from the side panel.

The browsing experience is similar to Firefox or Chrome, although with nuances that make it easier to access favorite websites and direct searches.
