Faced with a deficit scenario in the New York metropolis, the Democratic mayor has indicated that he will seek to raise taxes

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani began his term under strong political and fiscal pressure after revealing that the city is facing a budget deficit of more than 12 billion dollars over the next two years.
Although the new head of the municipal executive attributed the crisis to the management of his predecessors, his first public interventions have caused questions because of the lack of concrete measures to close the financial gap.
During an interview and a subsequent speech from City Hall, Mamdani described the fiscal situation as "negligence" and "poor governance," directly blaming former Mayor Eric Adams and former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
According to the mayor, both administrations concealed structural deficits by underestimating key expenses in areas such as rental assistance, shelters, special education, and social services, leaving a budgetary "time bomb" for his government.

According to the Office of the City Comptroller, the projected deficit reaches 12.6 billion dollars: 2.2 billion corresponding to fiscal year 2026 and 10.4 billion to fiscal year 2027. Mamdani compared the magnitude of the problem to the crisis experienced during the Great Recession and promised greater transparency about a fiscal outlook that, he said, was "hidden from New Yorkers for far too long."
Nevertheless, the mayor avoided detailing how he plans to balance the budget before February 17, the deadline for presenting the first spending plan of his administration.
After being repeatedly questioned by journalists, Mamdani only cited one specific example of possible savings: an artificial intelligence chatbot launched by the Adams administration that reportedly cost between 500,000 and 600,000 dollars and that he described as "practically unusable." Analysts and critics pointed out that this amount represents an insignificant fraction of the total deficit.

In the absence of announcements about substantial cuts or structural reforms, Mamdani reiterated his central campaign proposal: raising taxes on higher-income sectors.
The mayor is pushing to raise the city's corporate tax to 11.5% and create a flat 2% tax for residents who earn more than one million dollars a year. According to Mamdani, these resources would make it possible to strengthen public services and ensure a sustained recovery for the city.
The proposal, however, has caused concern among business and financial leaders, who warn about a possible flight of capital and high-income taxpayers. Mamdani rejected those fears, noting that the number of millionaires in New York increased after the state tax hikes of 2021.
Even so, his strategy depends to a large extent on the endorsement of the state government, and Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul has already made it clear that she opposes new tax increases, anticipating a possible political conflict.

The responses from previous administrations were not long in coming. Spokespersons for Cuomo and Adams accused Mamdani of distorting the facts and of ignoring determining factors such as the pandemic, the increase in Medicaid spending, the migration crisis, and the debt inherited from previous governments.
Those sectors maintain that the current mayor is using the deficit as a justification to move forward with an ideologically driven socialist agenda.
The confrontational tone adopted by Mamdani was also questioned. Critics point out that his rhetoric resembles that of an activist more than that of an executive administrator, especially considering that New York manages an annual budget close to 116 billion dollars.
