Chinese authorities met with Mozambican officials and are expanding their sphere of influence on the African continent.

The communist president of China, Xi Jinping, said on Tuesday that his country is “willing to work together with African nations” to mitigate the indirect effects of the conflict in the Middle East, in a context of growing international instability that, according to Beijing, is already affecting the economy and security of several countries on the continent African. The statements were made in Beijing during a meeting with the president of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, and were broadcast by Chinese state media.

Xi noted that the expansion of the conflict in the Middle East is generating “side effects” that reach Africa, especially in areas such as energy, trade and regional security. In this regard, he proposed closer cooperation between China and African countries to promote stability, boost economic development and coordinate responses to international crises, in an effort to increase their sphere of influence on the continent. The president also urged the international community to work for a ceasefire and to adopt what he defined as “genuine multilateralism”, based on cooperation between States

rather than confrontation.

During the meeting, Xi presented China and Africa, along with other countries in the Global South, as a “force of justice” in an international system that he described as changing and volatile. In his speech, he reiterated that cooperation between the two regions must focus on shared development, mutual respect and the promotion of peace, stressing the importance of maintaining global stability through dialogue and collaboration

The meeting also served to strengthen bilateral ties between China and Mozambique. Both countries agreed to raise their relations to the level of a “community with a shared future in the new era”, a diplomatic formulation that reflects the strengthening of the strategic alliance between Beijing and Maputo. This agreement is part of China's policy of expanding its presence in Africa through investment, infrastructure and economic cooperation

.

According to official data, bilateral trade between China and Mozambique reached 5.4 billion dollars in 2025. During the visit, both parties signed more than 20 cooperation agreements in areas such as trade, energy, agriculture, health, technology and media. In addition, initiatives linked to the Belt and Road Initiative, the main global infrastructure project promoted by Beijing, were reinforced

.

Xi also highlighted China's intention to expand the access of African products to its market by reducing tariffs and creating preferential export channels. He also proposed intensifying cooperation in emerging sectors such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence and renewable energy, with the objective of promoting “sustainable” economic growth in African countries

For his part, Mozambican President Daniel Chapo praised the relationship with China and expressed his government's interest in deepening bilateral cooperation. He also reaffirmed Mozambique's support for the “one China” principle and for various global initiatives promoted by Beijing, including the Belt and Road and other international development strategies

China's growing influence in Africa has generated harsh criticism in the international arena. Although Beijing presents its model as a “win-win” cooperation, many analysts warn that the expansion of Chinese investment may lead to a dangerous and greater economic dependence of African countries on China, especially in strategic sectors such

as infrastructure and natural resources.

In addition, China's position on the conflict in the Middle East, centered on general calls for a ceasefire and dialogue, has been interpreted by some observers as a vague position, which avoids taking direct sides in conflicts while seeking to maintain balanced relations with multiple regional actors.

Among the measures negotiated by China and Mozambique are the reduction of tariffs and the creation of exclusive export channels
