The communist mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, publicly spoke about the match between Argentina and Egypt in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, claiming without any evidence that the African team was "robbed" in the result.
During an official speech focused on public transportation issues in New York, the mayor introduced a football reference that quickly went viral.
In that context, he stated: "If you take the bus to work, the savings are considerable. In six months, you will have spent 24 hours less on the bus. After a year, you will have saved more than two days of commuting. That means having breakfast with your family."
He added: "It means having time to discuss balls and strikes in your child's little league baseball game. It means getting home in time for bedtime. It means agreeing with your friends that Egypt was robbed yesterday", repeating the unfounded accusations that emerged from various anti-Argentina sectors.
