The Democratic Party, at its lowest point: its popularity is the lowest in 35 years

A recent survey revealed worrying numbers for the Democratic establishment, which has also faced difficulties raising money lately

A recent survey published over the weekend places the Democratic Party at its most unpopular point in the last 35 years

The poll was conducted by The Wall Street Journal between July 16 and 20, showing a net favorability for the Democrats of -30 points, with only one third of the 1,500 respondents expressing any positive sentiment toward the party.

In greater detail, 63% of voters expressed an unfavorable opinion of the Democratic Party, and only 33% have a favorable opinion. Only 8% of voters view the Democrats as "very favorable."

Voters trust Trump and Republicans in Congress

Although the survey shows a certain skepticism from voters regarding Trump's performance on issues such as inflation and the trade war, they still trust Republicans more than Democrats to handle economic issues in Congress.

The only areas where Democrats outperform Republicans in the survey are in health care and vaccine policy, a fact that is not very surprising, since health issues have been the party's strong point in recent decades.

However, when it comes to immigration, the numbers become even darker for the blue side. Voters trust Republicans 17 points more than Democrats on immigration in general, and specifically 24 points more when it comes to illegal immigration.

The Democratic Party, with numbers in the red

In other numbers, the poll shows that 46% of voters would vote for a Democrat for Congress if elections were held today, compared to 43% who would support a Republican. However, that margin is narrower than the 8-point advantage Democrats had at the same point in Trump's first term in 2017.

With the data provided today, the Journal also admits that currently more voters identify as Republicans, considering that in 2017 Democratic voters outnumbered Republicans by six percentage points.

There is also a difference in funding between the two parties that is alarming for the opposition. The Republican National Committee ended the first half of the year with more than 80 million dollars available, while the Democratic side reported only 15 million to spend, raising 20% less than in the first six months of 2021.

Pollster John Anzalone stated that "the Democratic brand is so damaged that they have no credibility to criticize Trump or the Republican Party" and predicted a bleak future "until they reconnect with voters and the working class about whom they represent and what their economic message is."
