The Government of Denmark moved forward with the reopening of its embassy in Argentina, after having closed its diplomatic representation in Buenos Aires in 2022, during the presidency of the Kirchnerist Alberto Fernández. The decision was finalized with the appointment of Ida Heimann Larsen as the new ambassador, who was received this Friday by the chancellor Pablo Quirno, as part of the restoration of Danish diplomatic presence during the government of President Javier Milei.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs celebrated the return of the European country through his official X account and highlighted the change in the international relations scenario of Argentina. "Denmark closed its Embassy during the government of Alberto and Cristina Fernández and is reopening it with President Milei", Quirno expressed, accompanying his post with photographs of the meeting with the new diplomatic representative.

In this regard, the chancellor linked the decision to the international orientation adopted by the libertarian administration since December 2023. "The message is clear: foreign policy from December 2023 to today has been based on rebuilding trust in Argentina", he stated. Finally, he welcomed Larsen and assured: "Welcome, Ambassador! We have a lot of work ahead".
The Danish representation had closed its doors in August 2022, during the management of the Frente de Todos. However, the measure had been announced a year earlier, in August 2021, when the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs communicated a restructuring of its international diplomatic network. At that time, Copenhagen justified the decision by the need to reorganize its priorities and strengthen other representations abroad.
The return of Denmark occurs during the presidency of Javier Milei, in a context where the Argentine government seeks to expand its commercial and diplomatic ties with Europe. The Argentine Embassy in Copenhagen had already announced that the reopening would take place during 2026, with the aim of deepening political, economic, scientific, cultural, and educational cooperation, in addition to promoting new investment opportunities.

For her part, Ida Heimann Larsen had anticipated that she would take on the responsibility of organizing and directing the new diplomatic mission in Buenos Aires. The Danish representation is currently in the process of installation, with tasks of hiring staff and preparing its offices, while some services continue to be provided from the Danish embassy in Brasília.
The reopening will also strengthen the diplomatic presence of the European country in the region, as the new headquarters will have responsibilities related to Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Thus, the restoration of the embassy represents a new step in the bilateral relationship and opens a phase of greater institutional and commercialcooperation between both countries.
