Diana Would Be Heartbroken: James Hewitt Laments the War Between William and Harry
Lady Di's former lover claims she would have done 'everything possible' to keep her children together.
James Hewitt, who was Princess Diana Spencer's lover, claimed that she would have been deeply distressed by the dispute between her sons, Princes William and Harry. According to the former cavalry officer, the princess "would have done everything possible" to prevent their estrangement.
During a recent interview on the show Good Morning Britain, Hewitt stated that any mother would feel heartbroken in a similar situation. When asked if Diana would have tried to reconcile them, he replied that, without a doubt, she would have done everything possible to bring them back together.
A special bond with Diana
Hewitt had a close relationship with the Princess of Wales, which allowed him to know her deeply. Their romance began in 1986, after meeting at a cocktail party where he offered to give her riding lessons. According to former bodyguard Ken Wharfe, the former officer provided Diana with the affection and attention she longed for.

The relationship was kept secret for five years, with meetings at a country house in Devon, owned by Hewitt's mother. However, the romance came to an end when he was deployed to the Gulf War and, subsequently, when the relationship became public. In 1994, Hewitt collaborated on the book "The Princess in Love," where he revealed details of his story with Diana, which left her deeply hurt. A year later, in the iconic BBC interview, Diana admitted the romance but criticized Hewitt for betraying her trust.
The former officer lost public sympathy after publishing his memoirs in 1999 "Love and War," where he revealed more details about his relationship with Diana. Additionally, he was criticized for allegedly attempting to sell private letters the princess had written to him during the Gulf War, although they were never disclosed.

The rift between William and Harry
The princes have been estranged since 2016, when William expressed concern over Harry's rapid relationship with Meghan Markle. The tension worsened in 2020 with Harry and Meghan's decision to step back from royal life and move to California. Since then, meetings between the brothers have been scarce and cold.
The situation worsened in 2023 with the publication of Harry's memoir, "Spare," in which he accused William of being physically aggressive with him and of treating Meghan harshly. According to Ingrid Seward, a royal expert, Kensington Palace would have perceived these statements as a betrayal.

Close sources claim that the relationship between the brothers has hit rock bottom. A family friend mentioned that William alternates between pain and anger over what happened, as he believes Harry crossed unbreakable boundaries. Despite the estrangement, some hold hope that the brothers can reconcile in the future, a wish that, according to Hewitt, Princess Diana would have also shared.
