The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced on Thursday that his administration will very soon begin detaining suspected drug traffickers linked to Venezuela by land, expanding the current offensive that until now had focused its efforts on maritime operations.
During a virtual address to members of the United States armed forces, Trump stated: "You probably noticed that they no longer want to deliver drugs by sea, and we're going to start detaining them by land as well. Land is easier, but that's going to start very soon."
Since September 2025, the United States administration has intensified naval operations against vessels responsible for drug trafficking, targeting at least 21 boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific, with an official toll of 83 dead, according to official sources.

Government officials argue that these attacks have drastically reduced traffickers' use of maritime routes, forcing them to seek new land routes to bring drugs into the United States.
In this context, the decision to move to land operations represents what official sources describe as a "complementary phase" of the anti-drug campaign, aimed at closing all possible routes for drugs to enter the country.
The Trump administration openly blames the dictatorial regime ofNicolás Maduro for being responsible, or at least for allowing, a massive flow of illegal drugs into the United States. Maduro has systematically denied any link to drug trafficking.

The expansion of the scope of action, from sea to land, marks a significant escalation in the confrontation between Washington and Caracas, and intensifies pressure on the Venezuelan regime amid a growing diplomatic crisis.
According to the official statement, the United States armed forces are already preparing to deploy land operations, although so far, no details have been released about when, where, or how these actions will be implemented. No public versions of a concrete plan have been disclosed either.
The announcement has caused great expectations about the real scope of the measure, while fueling doubts in the international community regarding how long Venezuelan drug trafficking will be able to continue operating viably, seeing that all its routes to its main market are beginning to close.
