Epec hack in Córdoba: Instagram and Facebook were hacked with fake posts

The company confirmed the cyberattack and asked users not to trust content from those networks

The Empresa Provincial de Energía de Córdoba confirmed that it was the victim of a hack on Instagram and Facebook. The attack began on Saturday morning, according to spokesperson Alfredo Camponovo. The accounts were used to post messages in English and content unrelated to the company.

The hackers also posted messages related to "trading" and cryptocurrencies, as well as videos inappropriate for an institutional channel. On X, formerly Twitter, the company managed to quickly regain control. The password was reset and access is secured for official communication.

The situation on Instagram is more serious, since the strikers changed passwords and associated phone numbers. This prevents receiving verification codes by SMS and halts the recovery process. The manipulation leaves the network exposed to any fraudulent publication.

Fake posts and risk to the institutional image

The automatic replication of content caused Instagram posts to also appear on Facebook. The spokesperson indicated that the damage is significant due to the possibility of false messages that could confuse users. He also warned that every hour of inactivity increases the risk.

Epec is in contact with Meta technicians, the owner of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, to solve the issue. The process may take up to 72 hours while the changes made by the strikers are analyzed. The company is seeking to regain full administration.

The fraudulent posts remain visible and may damage the company's credibility. For this reason, they insist that users should not interact with or share them. The warning remains in effect until further notice.

Recommendations for customers

The company asked users to disregard any Instagram or Facebook message mentioning Epec. The only active and secure social media channel is its account on X, which is already under corporate control.

For complaints or reliable information, customers can use the official app, 0800 777 0000, or the email address on the institutional website. These channels are operational and protected from the attack. The priority is to maintain service and clear communication with users.

Epec also reminded users that digital identity theft is a crime. It announced that it will consider legal action to identify and sanction those responsible. The case adds to a growing wave of cyberattacks affecting public agencies across the country.
