Miguel Uribe Turbay's father announced his presidential pre-candidacy in Colombia
It will be for the same right-wing political party as his murdered son, to face the left in the elections
Miguel Uribe Londoño, father of the late senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, announced the launch of his presidential pre-candidacy in Colombia for Centro Democrático, following the assassination of his son, which occurred on June 7, 2025, in Bogotá.
The decision was officially communicated on Friday, August 22, after a series of meetings between the party leadership, the Uribe Turbay family, and the other group aspirants.
The announcement directly responds to the request submitted by Uribe Londoño on August 21. According to the official statement, the leader stated that “the family of Miguel Uribe Turbay unanimously decided that he would be the one to enter the selection process for the presidential candidate of the Centro Democrático Party in the absence of his son.” The document also notes that the nomination had the support of the other pre-candidates and the approval of the party leadership.

Looking ahead to the elections
Uribe Londoño's candidacy arises at a time of great shock for uribismo. The assassination of Miguel Uribe Turbay, senator and presidential pre-candidate, created an unprecedented scenario.
Following the attack, the group, led by former president Álvaro Uribe Vélez, expressed in various acts and statements its support for the family, making solidarity and accompaniment pillars during the political transition.
According to the party itself, Miguel Uribe Londoño will now assume participation in all debates and activities related to the electoral process. With his incorporation, he joins María Fernanda Cabal, Paloma Valencia, Andrés Guerra, and Paola Holguín, who are already part of the list of uribismo aspirants for the 2026 presidential nomination.

According to Colombian media, Uribe Londoño's first public appearance as a pre-candidate is scheduled for the Saturday following the announcement, in Bogotá. Back then, he will take part in a tribute organized by Álvaro Uribe Vélez in honor of his son, the late senator.
The party's agenda will continue with the resumption of the aspirants' forums, scheduled for Sunday, August 24. This event will focus on the fight against corruption and will serve as a platform for all pre-candidates to present their proposals and positions.
The process for selecting Centro Democrático's sole candidate includes conducting an international poll between December 2025 and January 2026, with the aim of determining who will represent the group in that year's elections.
Subsequently, the chosen candidate will participate in an inter-party consultation on March 8, open to other parties and sectors aligned with uribismo's guidelines, with the purpose of forming a unified platform for the presidential elections.
