Half-Life 3: sources claim that Valve is preparing to announce it before the end of the year

Although Valve still hasn't officially confirmed Half-Life 3 (internally identified as HLX), leaks and insider reports are fueling the idea of an imminent reveal.

The most recent reports indicate that the announcement could happen in the coming weeks and before The Game Awards 2025. While fans have speculated about several dates, none have coincided with key moments such as the anniversary of the first game or the presentation of Steam Machine.

Will Half-Life 3 be announced before December 12?

Journalist Mike Straw from Insider Gaming stated that, according to his sources, the game won't be one of the surprises at The Game Awards 2025. On the contrary: it could be revealed before the event, or even receive a teaser beforehand followed by a more in-depth preview during the ceremony.

Straw avoids giving a specific date because he suspects that some leaks could be deliberate. According to his analysis, Valve might be using "canary traps": different dates given to different employees to identify those leaking information.

Internal traps and conflicting rumors

Insider NateTheHate also discussed the topic and refused to mention dates until there is agreement among several sources. The lack of precision is due to a strategy that has already appeared in the past.

According to what Straw detailed in his podcast, this already happened with Half-Life: Alyx, when multiple contradictory dates were circulating because Valve was intentionally leaking them. This is why he insists that he won't share a date until he has solid confirmation.

Valve would control the announcement

Straw emphasized that Valve, just like Rockstar, decides how and when to communicate its releases. If Half-Life 3 appears at The Game Awards, he believes it will be because the company itself has already announced it publicly.
