It's official: Independiente has been eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana after the incidents.

CONMEBOL decided to disqualify Rojo from the competition after the violence that took place at the Libertadores de América during the match against U de Chile

The saga has finally come to an end. After two weeks of pure uncertainty, CONMEBOL issued an official statement in which it solved the disqualification of Independiente from the current Copa Sudamericana following the incidents with the fans of Universidad de Chile. With this decision, the South American governing body determined that the Chilean team will advance to the quarterfinals, where it will face Alianza Lima in a match that will be played at home in Coquimbo and behind closed doors.

The match in Avellaneda was suspended when the second half had just begun and the score was tied 1-1, a result that, added to the 1-0 from the first leg in favor of U, gave the Chilean team qualification.

Both clubs submitted their statements and this Tuesday appeared before CONMEBOL's Disciplinary Tribunal, which met with three of its members after removing the Argentine and the Chilean. There, each party confirmed its position, but the resolution was clear: elimination for Independiente and sanctions for both teams.

El Rojo will have to play its next seven home matches in CONMEBOL tournaments behind closed doors, without the presence of fans, and will have the same restriction in seven away matches. U de Chile received the same punishment, which will begin to be enforced in the series against Alianza Lima.

Additionally, the Argentine team was fined 250,000 dollars, while the Chilean club will have to pay 150,000. This is a heavy blow for both teams, which not only affects their sporting future but also their finances.
