Independiente out?: the leak that reveals CONMEBOL's possible final decision
Two weeks after the scandal in Avellaneda, the South American entity may have taken a drastic measure with Rojo
All the attention of South American football is focused on CONMEBOL, which must officially announce the final resolution of the Independiente vs. Universidad de Chile case, suspended last August 20 due to acts of vandalism at the Libertadores de América stadium.
After 14 days of waiting, the entity will decide this Wednesday or Thursday whether the Chilean team will be declared the winner by the aggregate score (2-1 in their favor) or if both teams will be eliminated, allowing Alianza Lima to advance directly to the semifinals.
According to reports after yesterday's hearing, both clubs presented their statements. Independiente requested to play the match on a neutral field, while Universidad de Chile argued that it was not directly responsible for the incidents caused by its supporters.

In this context, journalist Enrique de la Rosa, who was present at the hearing, stated that "everything indicates that Universidad de Chile will qualify, although it can't be confirmed until it becomes official".
If the Chilean team's qualification is confirmed, Alianza Lima will face U. de Chile in the quarterfinals under strict security measures: the first match will be played in Matute, with only home fans present, and the second leg will be in Coquimbo, behind closed doors. In addition, a sanction will be applied that prohibits the presence of visiting fans in both matches for the next two years.

"I was given an extra: that U. de Chile's match would be without fans there, and without visitors here, logically. They will be sanctioned 2 years without fans; U. de Chile and Independiente are between 2 and 3 years, and U. de Chile has chosen -if it is the qualified team- to play in Coquimbo. A stadium located in the small north of Chile for 18,500 spectators, but clearly without any spectators", De la Rosa specified.
CONMEBOL's official ruling is expected in the coming hours, and will determine the fate of the teams in the 2025 Copa Sudamericana, generating great anticipation in the region.
