Iran is going through one of the most violent episodes in its recent history. A report published by the Iran International Editorial Board denounced that at least 12,000 people were killed during the repression of the latest protests. This massacre is taking place in a context of a coordinated information blackout, massive media shutdowns, and persecution of journalists and witnesses.
"Iran is under a coordinated blackout aimed not only at security control, but at hiding the truth", the document states. The document is titled "The killing of 12,000 Iranians will not be buried in silence." According to the report, internet shutdowns, communication paralysis, and censorship seek "to prevent a vast and historic crime from being seen".

The investigation and sources consulted
The editorial explains that, in the face of initial reports that were "shocking and deeply concerning," the outlet decided to proceed with extreme caution to avoid mistakes. Only when the volume and convergence of evidence allowed it did the outlet publish an estimate.
For two days, the team reviewed information from a source close to the Supreme National Security Council. The team also consulted two sources from the presidential office and members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Mashhad, Kermanshah, and Isfahan. In addition, the team collected testimonies from relatives and witnesses, field reports, data from medical centers, and accounts from doctors and nurses.
12,000 dead in two nights
According to the findings, the repression took place mainly over two consecutive nights, Thursday, January 8, and Friday, January 9. This repression was described by the document as "the greatest massacre in Iran's contemporary history."
"In terms of geographical scope, intensity of violence, and number of deaths in a short period of time, this massacre is unprecedented", the report states. Most of the victims were young people under 30 years old, and they were reportedly gunned down by IRGC forces and the Basij militia.
The document emphasizes that these were not isolated clashes, but a "fully organized" operation.
