ABC indefinitely suspended the program following some deplorable statements about the commentator's murder

Jimmy Kimmel has been suspended indefinitely after mocking the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. ABC confirmed this Wednesday, September 17, that it will pull the show off the air for an indefinite period following the intense backlash caused by the comedian's comments during his Monday night monologue.

In that monologue, Kimmel, 57 years old, harshly criticized the MAGA movement's reaction to Kirk's murder, which occurred on September 10 on the Utah Valley University campus. "We've hit rock bottom next weekend with the MAGA gang trying to present this guy who killed Charlie Kirk as someone different from one of them," the host said.

These statements sparked a strong controversy. Nexstar Media Group, one of the most important media companies and a main affiliate of ABC, confirmed shortly after that it would also stop airing the show. In its statement, Nexstar announced that its partner stations will interrupt the broadcast of the leftist's show.

Kimmel's comments were "offensive and insensitive"

Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar's broadcasting division, described Kimmel's comments as "offensive and insensitive," especially at a politically delicate time for the country. "We don't believe they reflect the variety of opinions, viewpoints, or values of the local communities we serve," he stated.

Alford added that allowing Kimmel to continue having a platform in those markets "is not in the public interest at this time" and that it was a difficult decision, made to promote a more respectful and constructive dialogue.

The controversy even reached federal authorities. Brendan Carr, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), stated in an interview that the comedian's words could have legal consequences for him and for ABC. The official described the monologue as "one of the sickest behaviors possible."

Carr suggested that the situation could be solved if Kimmel, ABC, or its parent company, Disney, offered a public apology. "An apology would be a very reasonable and minimal step," he said. He also acknowledged that there are calls for Kimmel to be fired and that a suspension would be an expected response.
