Legislative elections: Trump congratulated Milei on his victory and celebrated that 'his confidence in him was justified by the Argentine people.'

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, congratulated Argentine President Javier Milei this Monday after the resounding victory of La Libertad Avanza in the midterm legislative elections. “Congratulations to President Javier Milei for his overwhelming victory in Argentina. He's doing a wonderful job! Our confidence in him was justified by the Argentine people”, Trump wrote on his Truth Social.

The American leader also added: “Milei is making us look good”, and shared a message from a Florida journalist who highlighted his influence on the Argentine electoral process.

Milei replied: “Our nations should never have stopped being allies”

Shortly after, the Argentine president replied on X (Twitter) with a message of gratitude:
“Thank you, President Donald Trump, for trusting the Argentine people. You are a great friend of the Argentine Republic. Our nations should never have stopped being allies”.

The interaction reinforced the political and economic alignment between Buenos Aires and Washington, a relationship that both leaders have been promoting since the beginning of the libertarian administration.

Financial support and international confidence

At the beginning of October, the White House offered Argentina support of US$20 billion, in the form of a currency swap aimed at stabilizing the economy. 

In the weeks leading up to the elections, the U.S. Treasury began buying Argentine pesos to support their value amid electoral volatility, in an unprecedented move of direct support for a Latin American government.

“A renewed mandate for reforms”

After the results were announced, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent posted a message on X:
“Argentina is a vital ally in Latin America. The results show that the policy of peace through economic strength is working”.

According to Bessent, Milei's victory represents “a renewed mandate” to continue with the structural reforms aimed at freeing the markets, reducing the deficit, and strengthening the currency.
