The socialist dictator admitted that meat and coffee are expensive and suggested replacing them with eggs, beans, or rice

The communist dictator of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, made a controversial statement regarding the rising cost of living faced by Brazilians, suggesting that, due to the inability to buy certain foods, the population can replace them with cheaper alternatives.

During an event held on Friday in Porto Alegre, the already aging leader openly acknowledged that many basic products are expensive and specifically mentioned meat and coffee. “I know that you go to the supermarket and things are expensive. Meat is expensive, coffee is expensive. Last year, eggs were through the roof,” Lula stated to those present.

However, far from limiting himself to acknowledging the deterioration of purchasing power, the leader of the Workers' Party responded with a particular recommendation on how to cope with food prices. After highlighting the enormous production of eggs in Brazil, Lula asserted: “If there is no meat, we eat eggs. If there are no eggs, we eat meat,” romanticizing the growing poverty in Brazil.

The president went even further and recalled the economic difficulties he personally faced during his youth to propose another alternative when a family cannot access either of the two products. “When there is neither, we eat, as I did when I took my lunchbox, just beans and rice,” he stated.

His words generated strong indignation as they were pronounced by the head of state himself, who, in theory, should be focused on improving the living conditions of Brazilians, especially after explicitly admitting the difficulties consumers face when it comes to feeding themselves.

Brazil recorded a monthly deflation of 0.32% in August. The accumulated inflation from January 2023 to August 2026 is approximately 17.9%, while various foods continue to have high prices for families, above wages.

The statement is also striking due to the contrast with one of the symbols historically used by Lula to talk about the well-being of workers: the access of Brazilian families to foods like meat.

This time, in front of consumers facing prices he himself acknowledged as high, Lula does not propose any solution to regain purchasing power, but rather the resignation of consumption.
