The Federal Supreme Court (STF) of Brazil has once again authorized two of former President Jair Bolsonaro's sons to visit him while he serves house arrest, although it imposed strict restrictions on the content of the meetings: Carlos and Jair Renan Bolsonaro are prohibited from using the meetings to discuss political or electoral matters.

The decision was made by Alexandre de Moraes, the communist judge of the Supreme Court who has led some of the main cases against bolsonarism and whose alignment with Lula's regime has been harshly questioned by the Brazilian opposition.

Carlos and Jair Renan will be able to visit their father at the residence in Brasilia where he is detained. However, the court itself established that "the political or electoral purpose" of the meetings is prohibited, as well as the subsequent dissemination of political or electoral manifestos through third parties, regardless of the medium used.

This measure is particularly relevant because both of Bolsonaro's sons are candidates for deputies in the general elections in October. In this way, they will be able to maintain personal contact with their father, but the Justice intends to determine even what matters they can discuss during family conversations.

The authorization does not extend to Flávio Bolsonaro, the right-wing presidential candidate favored to face Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Moraes prohibited him from visiting his father for 90 days after he disseminated a handwritten letter in which the former president publicly supported his candidacy.

Flávio had received the letter during a visit and later read it during a YouTube broadcast. The magistrate considered that the dissemination violated the restrictions imposed by the communist court that prevent Jair Bolsonaro from making political statements on social media even through third parties and extended the prohibition until after the first round of the presidential election.

The restrictions also come amid growing questioning from the Brazilian right against Moraes. At the end of July, an open microphone captured Lula inviting the magistrate to "have a coffee" after an official event. The episode reignited opposition criticism about the closeness between the Executive Power and one of the judges most politically opposed to bolsonarism.

The former president's family has also been accumulating judicial decisions against them. Eduardo Bolsonaro was sentenced in June to four years and two months in prison and politically disqualified for eight years in a case for alleged coercion of the Justice.

From the United States, Eduardo rejected the procedure and stated that he had not even been formally summoned. "Any sentence without due process is null", he stated at the time, in addition to accusing Moraes of acting as "victim and judge".

Jair Bolsonaro, for his part, remains under house arrest after being sentenced to more than 27 years in prison. Meanwhile, Flávio leads the electoral representation of the right-wing space and seeks to confront the continuity of the regime in October.
