Lumo: this is the free AI that bets on privacy against OpenAI and Google
Proton's new AI promises what no one else offers: total privacy and no storage of your chats in the cloud
Lumo is the new artificial intelligence assistant developed by Proton, the Swiss company behind services like Proton Mail and Proton VPN.
What makes it different is not its technical capability, but its extreme focus on privacy. To such an extent that not even the company itself can access your chats.

What is Lumo and why does it make a difference?
Lumo is an AI assistant that can summarize texts, generate emails, write code, and perform tasks similar to ChatGPT or Gemini.
However, unlike them, its greatest strength lies in how it protects users' personal data.
Privacy by design: this is how it works
- It doesn't store conversations in the cloud: everything is stored locally and is encrypted.
- Communications use the same encryption system as Proton Mail.
- Chats are not used to train language models.
- There are no agreements with companies like OpenAI or Google.

This means that no one can see what you talk about with the AI, not even the company that created it. Proton also commits to not sharing data with third parties under any circumstances.
What models does Lumo use and how does it connect?
Lumo operates with four open-source language models: Nemo, Mistral Small 3, OpenHands 32B, and OLMO 2 32B.

All of them run from data centers located in Europe, which reinforces control over jurisdiction and data protection.
Available features and how to access them
In addition to generating content, Lumo can perform web searches, although this feature is disabled by default to protect privacy. If enabled, it only uses private search engines.

Lumo is already available and can be used without creating an account. However, if you have a Proton account, you get access to:
- Synchronized chat history
- File upload for analysis
- Extended features depending on the plan
How much does Lumo cost and what does the paid version include?
The free version works without major restrictions, but there is Lumo Plus, a paid plan that costs 9.99 euros per month. It includes unlimited use, extended history, and compatibility with larger files.
