Mastantuono, after the draw against Monterrey: 'We're going to go for the win against Inter'

River's jewel regretted the lack of efficiency but showed determination for the crucial match against the Nerazzurri

The 0-0 draw between River and Monterrey left mixed feelings within Marcelo Gallardo's team, which dominated most of the match but was unable to reflect that superiority on the scoreboard.  Franco Mastantuono, one of the team's pillars and already sold to Real Madrid, expressed his frustration over the missed chances and delivered a strong message ahead of the next match: "We're going to go out and win".

"We have a match against the best team in the group and we're going to fight for it and win it", the young player stated at the post-draw press conference. "We have to win. We're at a club like River that demands you go out to win,  there's no room for speculation. We know it's a very tough opponent, but it's clear what we're going to do", he added.

Regarding the match against Rayados, Mastantuono highlighted the team's overall performance, although he acknowledged that efficiency was lacking: "We played very well, we had clear chances, but  we weren't sharp when it came to finishing and that ended up costing us the draw". He concluded: "If we had managed to score one, maybe the match would have opened up and gone our way, but that's how it turned out".

What Millonario needs to advance to the next round

With four points after two matches, the result of the victory over Urawa Red Diamonds and the draw against Monterrey, River leads Group E alongside Inter Milan, its next opponent. The decisive match will take place Wednesday at 10:00 p.m. at Lumen Field Stadium in Seattle.

To advance to the round of 16, Millonario depends on itself, since  if it defeats Inter it will qualify without relying on other results. However, any other result complicates the scenario:

  • If River draws 0-0 and Monterrey beats Urawa, Millonario is eliminated
  • If River draws 1-1 and Monterrey beats Urawa, Millonario could be eliminated if the Mexican team improves on Núñez's team's 3-1 win over Urawa (if it wins 3-1, qualification will be decided by Fair Play as they would also be tied on overall goal difference)
  • If River draws 2-2 or higher, it qualifies regardless of the Monterrey-Urawa result
  • If River loses to Inter, it can only qualify if Monterrey doesn't beat Urawa
