Video game Mewgenics achieved a historic debut. In just seven days since its launch on PC, it surpassed one million copies sold.
The figure makes it one of the most successful independent titles of the year. It also marks a new milestone in its creators' careers.
A project with more than a decade of history
The development of Mewgenics began in 2012. At that time, Edmund McMillen announced the idea after the success of The Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy.
The original proposal combined genetic cat breeding and turn-based combat. However, the project faced internal problems and ended up being canceled.
Years later, McMillen regained the rights. In 2018, he relaunched development together with Tyler Glaiel. The team redesigned mechanics and expanded the narrative focus. The result was a more ambitious and deeper roguelite.

Record sales and furor on Steam
Before the release, more than 400,000 players had already added the title to their wish list. That anticipation translated into massive sales during the first week.
On Steam, the game reached a peak of 115,428 concurrent players. After the launch, it maintained an estimated daily base of between 50,000 and 100,000 users connected at the same time.
