The national government announced the acquisition of 43 brand-new trains for the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), an investment of USD 300 million aimed at modernizing a railway system battered by years of neglect and lack of maintenance. The operation, made official by Trenes Argentinos, includes 150 passenger cars, supplies, spare parts for the first three years, and all the technical documentation necessary for the commissioning of the trains.
After nearly a decade without renewal of rolling stock—the last purchase dated back to 2015—the measure represents a radical shift from the inherited structural mismanagement. According to the Transportation Secretariat, the incorporation of these trains will improve frequency, reduce travel times, and optimize boarding and disembarking conditions for passengers, especially on lines that transport the 1.3 million daily users of AMBA. The new units, technically called Diesel Multiple Units (DMU), will be assigned to the Roca, Mitre, Sarmiento, San Martín, and Belgrano Sur lines. Another key advantage is that they will consume almost half the fuel compared to the locomotives currently in operation, which means substantial savings for the State and greater efficiency in daily operations.
This purchase adds to the recent incorporation of three diesel-electric locomotives for USD 7 million for the San Martín line, which are expected to arrive in January 2026. Meanwhile, the acquisition of railway spare parts for USD 119 million for the Mitre, Sarmiento, and Roca lines is underway, an operation that had not been carried out for nine years. The plan is framed within the provisions of DNU 525/24 on Railway Emergency, which ordered a comprehensive process of cost optimization, infrastructure, and safety standards.
Trenes Argentinos also highlighted that training for railway personnel increased by 75% and technical standards were simplified, two measures aimed at improving operational safety and professionalizing the sector. Trenes Argentinos
While passenger transport is being modernized, the government is also moving forward with the privatization process of Belgrano Cargas y Logística S.A. According to sources from Casa Rosada, the tender is practically finished and will be published in December. The objective is to complete the privatization before the end of the year, under the scheme approved by Decree 67/2025.
The funds from the auction will be allocated to a trust to finance works on the concessioned tracks. This is the first time in decades that a comprehensive process has been undertaken to organize a historically unprofitable freight system that has been subject to political logics unrelated to efficiency.
