Milei's government reaffirmed the central role of the family in a UN workshop

The Argentine delegation reaffirmed the essential role of the family as the cornerstone of every society

Javier Milei's government actively participated in the "Expert Workshop on the Role of the Family, Family-Oriented Approaches, Policies, and Programs in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights," organized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

In its intervention, the Argentine delegation, represented by Carlos Foradori, reaffirmed the essential role of the family as the essential core of society and highlighted its explicit recognition in several key international legal instruments.

During the official statement delivered before the forum in Geneva, the Argentine representation welcomed the holding of the workshop and expressed its gratitude to the Office of the High Commissioner for revitalizing an agenda that, as they indicated, has been unjustly relegated in various multilateral forums.

"The protection of the family is an essential principle of international law. However, in many United Nations forums, the mere mention of the concept of family continues to generate divisions," the delegation stated.

"This tension contrasts with the clarity of the essential treaties," they added, making direct reference to foundational documents such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

These instruments recognize the family as the "natural and essential element of society," and establish its right to protection by the State. Additionally, Argentina made special mention of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which considers the family as a right of the child, both before and after birth. "The child should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love, and understanding," they recalled, quoting the Preamble of the treaty.

In its intervention, the Argentine representative questioned the refusal of some international sectors to incorporate explicit references to the family in new documents and resolutions. "Given this strong normative basis, any resistance to including the protection of the family in international documents is regressive in light of the obligations already assumed by States," they stated.

Finally, the speech concluded with a call to renew international commitments regarding the family as an essential institution for human dignity: "This is urgent, because the family is where the most fragile aspects of human life—at its beginning and at its end—find care, protection, and shelter."

Participation in this workshop is part of a broader strategy of Argentine diplomacy to reinforce universal values from a human rights perspective that recognizes and protects the family as the pillar of every society.
