Mirtha Legrand commented on the election of Pope León XIV: 'I loved it'
One of the most iconic figures in Argentine television shared his first impression of the historic election
Just days after an event that shook the entire world, the death of Pope Francis, the Vatican announced the new leader of the Catholic Church, the American cardinal Robert Prevost, who adopted the name Leo XIV. Amid this significant spiritual and political change, one of the most iconic figures of Argentine television, Mirtha Legrand, shared her opinion on the historic election that took place.
During her classic program La Noche de Mirtha, the 97-year-old host took a few minutes to address the recent papal appointment. With her sober and direct style, Mirtha expressed: "On Thursday, Cardinal Robert Prevost, born in the United States, was elected Pope," she began saying. "He took the name Leo XIV. May God enlighten him to achieve peace in the world and continue Francis's legacy," the host continued saying. "God willing," she concluded.

These words reflect not only her respect for the papal figure but also her hope that the pastoral and social line that characterized Francis's pontificate, the first Argentine Pope in history, will be maintained. The journalist did not hide her enthusiasm and shared her first impressions: "I was very impressed. I loved it. I thought it was a good choice. He was very well received by the public."
The new pontiff, Leo XIV, of American origin, presents himself as a leader with a renewing profile and a strong pastoral imprint. His appointment represents a significant change in the leadership of the Church, and his election has caused a wide debate at the international level. However, for Legrand, an opinion figure in Argentina for decades, Prevost's arrival at the Vatican is a positive step for the Catholic community.
Mirtha's comment did not go unnoticed on social media, where many of her followers shared her words and agreed with her optimistic view of the recent election. The host continues to demonstrate throughout her career a deep connection with current issues, and she never hesitates to express her opinion on social, political, and religious matters that have impacted Argentine society.
