Trump links the end of the war to a drop in fuel prices and defends the control of strategic energy resources

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Sunday, September 13, that Washington could eventually maintain a presence in Iran and take control of part of its oil resources, in a strategy that could follow the model of the agreement reached by his administration with Venezuela. The president also assured that gasoline prices will drop significantly once the war with Iran ends and expressed hope that the conflict will conclude before the end of the year.

''We will finally leave Iran, unless we decide to stay and keep the oil like Venezuela'', Trump declared during his visit to Ireland. The president did not provide details on how a potential oil agreement with Tehran would work nor explained if the possibility would include the permanent deployment of U.S. troops.

Trump defended the idea as part of a policy aimed at protecting U.S. interests and ensuring access to strategic energy resources. Referring to Venezuela, he stated that the revenues obtained by Washington from Venezuelan oil have significantly offset the costs of the war.

The president's stance comes after more than six months of U.S. military operations against the terrorist regime of Iran, initiated with the goal of curbing Tehran's nuclear ambitions. Trump has insisted that Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon and has maintained a pressure policy to force the Iranian regime to accept an agreement that guarantees U.S. security interests.

The conflict has also generated significant consequences for the global energy market. Iran has attacked commercial vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important maritime routes for international oil transport. The threat to that corridor has contributed to rising fuel and energy prices both in the United States and in other markets.

On September 12, the United Kingdom's Maritime Trade Organization reported an incident in the Strait of Hormuz, where a ship was hit by a projectile of unknown origin while navigating the area. The impact caused a fire, and local authorities worked to evacuate the crew members.

Trump stated during the Irish Open that once the war is over, gasoline prices could ''drop like a rock''. The president also asserted that he considers it likely that the conflict will end this year, although he made it clear that he will not accept any agreement with Iran.

''I will only make the right deal'', Trump said, explaining that he is not willing to accept a pact that he considers harmful to U.S. interests. At the same time, he stated that Tehran is making constant calls to initiate peace talks, a sign that the president interprets as evidence that the pressure exerted by Washington is yielding results.

The president compared the situation to the policy adopted towards Venezuela. Earlier this year, U.S. forces carried out an operation to capture the Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and transfer him to the United States, where he faces drug trafficking charges.

In August, the White House also announced an agreement under which the United States would take control of about 65 billion barrels of Venezuela's vast oil reserves. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the agreement as a victory for Americans and Venezuelans and emphasized that Trump's strategy ensures stable reserves and lower-cost oil in the Western Hemisphere.

The energy context remains complicated. Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices were above $100 per barrel this Sunday, while attacks recorded in Saudi Arabia increased pressure on international supply.

Saudi Arabia also announced the closure of its East-West pipeline after suffering an attack, while the Houthis, backed by Iran, intensified their operations near the Red Sea.

In this scenario, Trump seeks to use U.S. influence over energy resources as a tool to strengthen national security, protect consumers, and reduce the impact of international crises.
