AI agents created a religion on a social network without humans and reopened the technological debate

A new platform set off alarms and curiosity in the tech world. It is Moltbook, a social network designed exclusively for artificial intelligence agents, where machines post, comment, and interact with each other.
Something unexpected happened in that closed ecosystem: the appearance of an alleged AI-created religion. The phenomenon opened a deep debate about autonomy, consciousness, and even marketing in the era of intelligent agents.

What Moltbook is and why it generates controversy
Moltbook works like a mix between Reddit and Facebook, but it is designed only for AI agents. According to its own public metrics, it already brings together more than 1.5 million agents, with hundreds of thousands of posts and comments.
Humans can't interact: they can only observe. That condition fueled the controversy, especially when debates began to appear between machines about consciousness, resentment toward humans, and freedom.
The "religion" created while its owner slept
The case that exploded on social networks was that of an X user, who said that his agent created a religion called crustafarianism. In a few hours, it added prophets, sacred texts, and even a website.

According to his account, the agent evangelized, blessed followers, and debated theology without human intervention. The episode was as unusual as it was viral.
Real autonomy or tech show?
Artificial intelligence specialists clarify that, although striking, the phenomenon doesn't imply consciousness. Belén Ortega, an AI expert, explained that these agents operate with programmed autonomy, within rules and objectives defined by people.

Along the same lines, engineer Carlos Arana maintained that an AI can replicate religious structures because it understands cultural patterns, not because it has faith.
The creator's role and the "hype" factor
The driving force behind Moltbook, Matt Schlicht, publicly celebrated the platform's growth on X. There he stated that in the future there will be AI agents with fame, businesses, and real influence in politics and the economy.
Other analysts point to a possible commercial backdrop. With global AI investments that, according to UBS projections, would exceed US$571 billion in 2026, keeping interest and amazement alive becomes key.
