Netflix confirms theatrical and streaming release of Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein
Guillermo del Toro's new project will have a limited theatrical release before arriving on Netflix on November 7, 2025
Netflix has announced the release date for Frankenstein, the highly anticipated adaptation directed by Guillermo del Toro. The film will arrive in selected theaters on October 24, 2025, with a limited run to meet the requirements of the Academy of Hollywood, and will then debut on the streaming platform on November 7, 2025.
A release designed to compete for the Oscars
The strategy is not new: Netflix usually grants theatrical releases only to titles with aspirations in the awards circuit. This already happened with Pinocchio, a film that earned Del Toro an Oscar, and now the approach is repeated with Frankenstein.
The Academy requires a minimum number of theatrical screenings to consider a film for awards season. For this reason, the streaming giant reserved two weeks of screenings prior to its digital launch.
Top-tier cast for an immortal story

The film brings together a star-studded cast: Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Christian Convery, Sofia Galasso, Felix Kammerer, Ralph Ineson, Burn Gorman, and Charles Dance, among others. The casting choices confirm the ambition of the project, both artistically and competitively.
A key date on the calendar
The release of Frankenstein is carefully scheduled between Halloween and the start of the peak awards season. This window will allow it to attract both audiences seeking a classic horror tale and Academy voters, who pay close attention to major year-end productions.
Hybrid release: theaters and streaming

Netflix's stance regarding theaters remains restrictive: most of its films go straight to streaming. However, exceptions are made for projects with high technical and artistic potential. In this case, Frankenstein will have the opportunity to shine on the big screen before becoming available in every home.
One of the most anticipated films of 2025
With Guillermo del Toro at the helm, a stellar cast, and Netflix's backing, Frankenstein is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about releases of next year. The film promises a new take on Mary Shelley's work, combining the dark and poetic vision that characterizes the Mexican director.
