The Argentina Tennis National Team already knows its first obstacle in the 2026 Davis Cup. This Sunday, during the draw held at Bologna Fiere before the final between Spain and Italy, it was determined that the opponent will be South Korea, in a series that will be played away.
The president of the AAT, Agustín Calleri, analyzed the matchup with realism and a touch of irony: "We got Korea, quite a long trip... but if we win, we'd play at home, so we have to look on the bright side. We have to go and win. The longest trips were Korea and Japan, so we'll have to start the year traveling," he said in an interview with Radio La Red.
The series will be played on February 6 and 7 or February 7 and 8 (depending on South Korea's choice) on the surface chosen by the hosts. This stop represents an additional challenge for Argentina, since, at that time, most of the national players usually compete in the South American clay court tour, so a trip to the Asian continent complicates planning and adaptation to the fast surfaces that South Korea typically uses. If Argentina wins this matchup, the Albiceleste will face the winner between the Netherlands and India.

For Argentina, the matchup comes after the recent elimination in the round of 16 against Germany, in a very close series played in Bologna. The team led by Javier Frana had been the only South American team to reach the Finals, an achievement valued within the circuit.
Meanwhile, South Korea's most recent precedent was its 3-1 home victory over Kazakhstan in Chuncheon, on a fast court, with a team made up of Hyeon Chung (366th), Sanhui Shin (374th), Soonwoo Kwon (481st), Uisung Park (242nd in doubles) and Jisung Nam (168th in doubles). At the beginning of February this year, they had lost 4-0 to the Czech Republic in the first round of the Qualifiers.
As in 2025, the 2026 qualifying format includes two rounds. The first, corresponding to these Qualifiers, will be played between February 6 and 8, while the second is scheduled between September 18 and 20, with the host countries having the authority to choose dates and surface.
With a long trip ahead, adverse conditions, and an opponent accustomed to fast courts, Argentina will face a demanding start to the season, but with the conviction of returning to the ranks of the world's best.
