The publication of 3.5 million pages of documents by the United States Department of Justice once again put the relationship between Jeffrey Epstein and Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates under scrutiny, based on a series of draft emails and statements written by Epstein himself in 2013 that contain serious accusations against the magnate. Gates's circle categorically rejected the claims and described them as "completely false."
The released material includes unsent drafts in which Epstein writes impersonating Boris Nikolic, Gates's longtime scientific adviser and a figure linked to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
In a text dated July 18, 2013, Epstein portrays Nikolic as being caught in an alleged marital crisis between Bill and Melinda Gates and claims that, as the businessman's "right-hand man," he allegedly took part in "morally inappropriate, ethically questionable, and potentially illegal" conduct.

Among the most striking accusations, Epstein keeps that Gates allegedly asked for help obtaining medication to treat sexually transmitted diseases, supposedly contracted after having sexual relations with "Russian girls."
The draft also alludes to extramarital affairs, to the facilitation of encounters with married women and to requests for Adderall (amphetamines) for bridge tournaments. The texts contain multiple spelling and grammatical errors, and there is no evidence that they were sent or validated by Nikolic.
In another email draft, Epstein (again writing as if he were Nikolic) accuses Gates of trying to cover up information to preserve his reputation and that of the foundation.
That message mentions an alleged request to delete emails related to a venereal disease, the provision of antibiotics that were allegedly administered covertly to Melinda French Gates, and explicit intimate references.

Epstein suggested that a public revelation could significantly affect philanthropic initiatives, including The Giving Pledge, with a potential financial impact of billions of dollars.
After the documents became known, a spokesperson for Gates stated that the accusations are "absurd" and that the files reflect Epstein's frustration at not maintaining an ongoing relationship with the businessman, as well as the financier's attempts to defame or pressure him. Gates has repeatedly maintained that his connection with Epstein was limited to conversations about philanthropy and that it was a "grave mistake" to have spent time with him.
The relationship between the two was documented at least since 2011, when they met at Epstein's residence on the Upper East Side of New York, years after the financier registered as a sex offender following a 2008 conviction.
There is also a 2014 photograph that shows them together at Microsoft's offices in the Seattle area. Gates has stated that he never attended Epstein's parties or visited his properties in Florida or New Mexico, and that the meetings were professional and held with other people present.

Melinda French Gates, who divorced Bill Gates in 2021, has publicly expressed her rejection of her ex-husband's meetings with Epstein. In interviews, she stated that she made her opposition clear and that, after meeting Epstein only once, she considered him "repugnant" and "evil," in addition to expressing her solidarity with the victims.
The DOJ documents also reveal that Microsoft permanently suspended Epstein's Xbox Live account in 2013, as part of an agreement with the New York Attorney General's Office to remove registered sex offenders from online gaming platforms.
