The trial for the death of Diego Armando Maradona is once again under scrutiny after a discrepancy in the documentation used by the medical board involved in the investigation was detected during the oral debate. One of the analyzed studies did not belong to the former footballer, but to his father,Don Diego Maradona.
The episode came to light during the testimony of one of the 20 experts who participated in the medical board. According to TN, the specialist was explaining various studies related to Diego's renal function when one of the lawyers cross-checked the documentation and noted that one of the reports actually belonged to his father.
The document in question was a study conducted in 2015. That year, Don Diego had also been hospitalized and treated by Swiss Medical and his tests had shown altered results due to various health issues he was suffering from.
The detection of that report raised a question within the process: to determine to what extent the incorrect documentation may have been used by the medical board in formulating its conclusions about Maradona's health status and the circumstances of his death.
The medical board analyzed a health study of Maradona's father
Mario Baudry, lawyer for Dieguito Fernando Maradona, confirmed the irregularity and stated: "What is being questioned is a study that was done on Diego in 2015". The attorney also doubted that it was merely a mistake and was emphatic regarding the time elapsed: "After six years, I don't believe it was incompetence, but something deliberate".
Nonetheless, Baudry clarified that, in his view, the finding would not change the central conclusions of the case. Despite this, he considered that the situation is particularly serious and described the episode as a "scandal", asserting that a piece of evidence included in the file may have been tampered with.
The irregularity will now need to be analyzed within a trial that seeks to determine the responsibilities for Maradona's death, which occurred on November 25, 2020. The emergence of documentation pertaining to his father thus adds a new point of controversy to the oral debate.
