The 2026 transfer market is already generating anticipation in Argentine soccer, and in Núñez there is a name that sparks special excitement: Nicolás Otamendi. According to journalist Leo Paradizo on ESPN, the defender of the Argentina National Team has reportedly made the decision to join River once the 2026 World Cup ends, thus fulfilling a long-held personal wish.

According to the information released, "someone very close to the player" confirmed that the defender has already communicated his intention to return to the club if the management gives its approval. The possibility is exciting both symbolically and athletically. Otamendi keeps a competitive level in Europe and is considered one of the most solid and respected pillars of the Scaloneta.

The possibility has ignited the hopes of River fans, who dream of one of the most anticipated returns in recent years to national soccer. Otamendi, currently playing for Benfica and world champion in Qatar 2022, has never hidden his fondness for River. In various interviews, he has acknowledged his desire to wear the Red Band jersey before retiring, although contractual issues have delayed the dream.

The center-back extended his contract with the Portuguese club until mid-2026, so his arrival in Núñez could take place in the second half of that year, when he will be 38 years old.

If his arrival is confirmed, Otamendi would join the list of world champions who have returned to Argentine soccer in recent months: Ángel Di María returned to Rosario Central, Leandro Paredes to Boca, while Gonzalo Montiel, Marcos Acuña, and Germán Pezzella strengthened River. His addition would complete a squad with a strong Albiceleste identity.
