The defendants in the 'notebooks' mega-case offered fortunes to erase their crimes. The attempt to buy impunity outrages society

The Cuadernos de la Corrupción case once again exposes the rot at the core of Argentina's political and business system. Just days before Federal Oral Court No. 7 (TOF 7) makes a key decision, it has come to light that nearly fifty defendants are offering millions to extinguish criminal proceedings under the concept of "comprehensive reparation."
The list is long: 46 prominent names among businesspeople, financiers, and former officials. All of them, key players in the bribery scheme that for more than a decade drained billions of dollars from the State, now seek to escape justice with checks, real estate, and even luxury yachts.
Millions on the table to "buy" justice
The amounts offered are as varied as they are scandalous. Ángelo Calcaterra, cousin of Mauricio Macri and former owner of IECSA, put USD 1.68 million on the table to avoid the dock. Ernesto Clarens, financier linked to Lázaro Báez, offered an apartment and a yacht in Miami valued at USD 1.5 million. Aldo Roggio, a historic transportation businessman, is seeking his way out with USD 1.26 million.
Other cases are outrageous for their absurdity: Alberto Taselli, linked to Kirchnerism, intends to close his case with just USD 10,000. Other defendants, such as Mario Marcuzzi, offered ridiculous amounts, even lower than the price of a used car.

Corruption as a system
The case file reveals what everyone suspected: for years, Kirchnerist governments set up an illegal fundraising system in which businesspeople paid bribes in exchange for public works contracts, subsidies, or privileges.
In the notebooks of driver Oscar Centeno, hundreds of deliveries of illicit money were recorded, confirmed by dozens of "repentant" witnesses. Now, those same individuals who admitted to paying or receiving bribes are trying to close the case with a checkbook instead of a conviction.

The judicial dilemma and the message to society
TOF 7 must decide whether to accept or reject this unusual attempt at economic reparation. The decision is no small matter: if it is validated, it opens the door for major corrupt actors to never set foot in prison, establishing the idea that stealing from the State is profitable as long as there is money to return a fraction later.
For Argentine society, battered by decades of political plundering, the maneuver is yet another mockery. The same people who for years enriched themselves at everyone's expense now seek to buy impunity in dollars, making it clear that for the business and political elite the law has never been the same as for the ordinary citizen.
