The continuity of Memphis Depay at Corinthians took an unexpected turn in just a few days. After the management initially decided not to proceed with the renewal of the forward, both parties resumed talks and finally reached a new agreement.
The negotiation had been stalled mainly due to the economic demands of the player. Memphis wanted to receive around 70 million reais, about 13 million dollars, over the next two seasons. Additionally, he had requested additional benefits, including a private box at the Neo Química Arena, the use of the stadium for personal events, and a share in certain future bonuses.
Memphis Depay will continue at Corinthians until 2028
The initial decision by Corinthians provoked public anger from the player. Through his social media, Memphis questioned why the club had changed its stance after allegedly reaching a prior agreement.
“Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honor our agreement reached to extend my contract for two more years. This renewal was explicitly agreed upon by both the president and the sports, legal, and financial departments. However, some people decided to break that commitment,” expressed the Dutchman.
